Jax Pavan’s New Lightsaber

The Last Jedi

Jax Pavan’s New Lightsaber is a weapon Jax Pavan and Laranth Tarak constructed together, using a crystal that came to him from an unexpected source. More than a replacement for the Sith blade he had been using, it becomes a reassuring presence and a focus for the practices that steady him; later, its blue-green light announces his entry into a deadly confrontation with Darth Vader.

Construction and Significance

Jax and Laranth made the lightsaber using a crystal whose arrival was unexpected. The weapon’s weight against Jax’s hip comforted him, as did the knowledge that he could put away the Sith blade he had previously carried. The contrast gives the new weapon both practical and personal importance: it is a shared creation with Laranth and a means of leaving the older blade behind.

Practice and Meditation

Jax’s practice with the lightsaber had become a meditation. He went through its combat forms alongside the careful tending of a tiny, centuries-old tree in his quarters, a gift from Laranth. I-Five had taught him how practitioners of the ancient art of miisai trimmed and guided branches, and Jax learned to do so with tiny tendrils of the Force. The saber forms and the work on the tree offered distinct but complementary ways to settle his attention.

That routine had lapsed for two days while Jax and his companions prepared to move Thi Xon Yimmon offworld. Jax told himself the aggressive timetable was responsible, but he knew that meditation also brought him back to the message from the Cephalon. In this interval, the lightsaber remains associated with a practice he has avoided, as well as with the comfort it usually provides.

Concealment During the Mission

When Jax and Laranth entered the Mossy Glen Inn in Big Woolly under merchant disguises, he left the lightsaber with I-Five. Their surroundings called for the appearance of successful traders, not armed combatants, and Jax did not want anyone to suspect that he was a Jedi. The decision shows the weapon’s visibility could create a risk: for this meeting, leaving it behind helped preserve his cover.

The Confrontation Aboard Ship

The lightsaber returned to Jax’s hand after Laranth gave her life in the ship’s aft passage. As Darth Vader blocked the way ahead with stormtroopers, Jax’s weapon hummed to life and cast blue-green light into the dim corridor. Vader then ignited his own blade, whose blood-red radiance spread across the bulkheads. Against that color, Jax’s lightsaber makes his response visible: he steps toward Vader and the companions trapped with him, carrying the weapon that had been a quiet comfort into open conflict.
